NOTES: This sculpture is a hand-made replica of Poul Henningsen's iconic Artichoke Lamp created entirely using wood and drywall reclaimed from art galleries. The original Artichoke Lamp was designed in 1958 and has since become an icon of modern design, and a high priced luxury item. This new version comments on the throwaway culture of art galleries and the frequent construction and demolition of walls to accommodate exhibitions. This piece transforms that used drywall "trash" into a functional and high design object, and was created by studying photographs of the original lamps found on the internet. |
